Karen S. Johnson-Cartee

A Professor of Advertising and Public Relations and Communication Studies, Dr. Johnson-Cartee’s primary area of research is in political communication, specializing in political advertising, political impression management, and political news. Particularly interested in theory, Dr. Johnson-Cartee has emphasized symbolic interactionism, the narrative paradigm, framing theory, social construction theory, and impression management in her doctoral courses. Dr. Johnson-Cartee has co-authored four research books:

Negative Political Advertising Coming of Age (1991);
Inside Political Campaigns: Theory and Practice (1997a);
Manipulation of the American Voter: Political Campaign
Commercials (1997b); and
Strategic Political Communication: Rethinking Social Influence, Persuasion, and Propaganda (forthcoming, 2003).

She is currently finishing aresearch book on political news analysis. Dr. Johnson-Cartee has been an active political consultant during most of her time at the University.
