This is a list of current positions available in electronic media within the College of Communication.  Based on qualifications and at the discretion of the employer, students may be compensated for these positions by work experience, internship course credit, work-study program payments or departmental salary.  It is the general policy of the college to reserve credit and salaried positions for those who have completed a voluntary trial placement.  For the purposes of course credit each semester credit hour requires 115 hours of work.  Maximum undergraduate degree course credit for internships is 3 hours.  Students are advised to apply for these positions at least one semester in advance and prior to registering for classes to be taken during the work semester.

CENTER FOR PUBLIC TELEVISION

NEW MEDIA PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

A position within CPT’s Production House Department, which produces programming for

WVUA 23/7 as well as client-based video and multimedia programming.  Responsibilities may include client relations, concept development, video production and new media production including CD-ROM, DVD, Web and 3D animation. 

Specialties with training available in:

  • Graphic Design
  • 3D animation
  • CD Rom production
  • DVD authoring / Final Cut Pro non-linear video editing

HOURS PER WEEK:  5-20

QUALIFICATIONS: At least one year of experience in studio/field production and post-production. Working knowledge of all aspects of production.

PROMOTIONS PRODUCER

A position with The Production House at the Center for Public Television, which produces promotional spots for WVUA 23/7.   Responsibilities include coordinating, editing, and producing a wide range of on-air promotional spots that fit WVUA 23/7’s brand identity. Good opportunity to learn about marketing and station/program promotion.  Will be responsible for producing station ID's, image spots, daily news topicals, special sales projects, and other related promotions. Must be creative and able to produce fast paced, high impact promotions.

HOURS PER WEEK:  20

QUALIFICATIONS:  At least one year experience in studio/field production and non-linear editing. Working knowledge of all aspects of production.

FIELD PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

An assistant to CPT’s videographers involving single camera on-location production for documentary and other formats. Good opportunity for learning documentary form, electronic cinematography/videography, lighting and location audio.  Responsibilities include equipment transport and set up, audio monitoring, camera and lighting assistance.  Extensive single day travel. Secondary duties as needed may include general production assistance in studio production, maintenance, staging and lighting, tape duplication, transcription, etc.

HOURS PER WEEK:  5-20

QUALIFICATIONS:  Strong interest in image making.  Prior field production experience preferred.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: Must be completely free M-W-F or T-TH. Some weekend work.

ADVANCED VIDEOGRAPHY CO-OP MENTORSHIP

Full Time paid employment for two semesters through the UA Cooperative Education program.  Intended for students with significant prior experience in videography and a serious interest in videography/cinematography as a career.   Position is assistant and understudy to CPT videographers.  Experience involves hands-on training with CPT equipment including digital and HD cameras.  Advanced lighting techniques. Curriculum includes readings and independent shooting projects as well as work on CPT documentaries and other formats.  Extensive travel. 

HOURS PER WEEK:   40

QUALIFICATIONS:  One year of experience in videography in a professional or advanced classroom environment, a sample reel and resume, recommendations by professional or academic references.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: Full time availability for 2 semesters (not necessarily contiguous)

NON-LINEAR EDITING ASSISTANT

An assistant to CPT editors using Final Cut Pro software and working on interview, documentary and other program formats.  Duties include video capture and file management assistance and some independent editing responsibilities. 

HOURS PER WEEK:  5-20

QUALIFICATIONS:  Completion of coursework including non-linear editing component or equivalent professional experience. Professional or academic references and sample reel.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:           8-12A or 1-5P availability at least 2 days per week.

ASSISTANT PRODUCER FOR DOCUMENTARY

An advanced position for qualified upper level students interested in a career in cultural documentary film and video.  Responsibilities include topic research, transcription, and clerical support.  Depending on skill level, may also be involved in organization, planning and story development.  May participate in location production if class schedule allows.  Primarily intended for those with interest in history, cultural studies, political science or the arts who want to learn to adapt that content to the documentary filmmaking process. 

HOURS PER WEEK:  5-20

QUALIFICATIONS:  Interest in cultural/political themes and storytelling. Classroom or professional experience preferred.

GENERAL PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

Entry level position for those with less than full day availability, but with interest in general introduction to CPT production.  In addition to in-house production training and orientation sessions, duties may include studio and control room operations, staging and lighting, duplication, transcription and studio/production maintenance.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:           8-12A or 1-5P availability at least 2 days per week.
