Jim Oakley, placement director for the university's College of Communication
and Information Sciences, was the first university photographer
for the UA News Bureau. Many of his exclusive photographs
of the angry crowds that forced the first African-American to attend
the university, Autherine Lucy, to leave the campus after only a
few days, were seized by the FBI. Oakley, however has hung on to
his memories of that time as well as the Schoolhouse Door confrontation
in 1963.
