The Department of Journalism is housed within the College of Communication and Information Sciences within Reese Phifer Hall on campus.
When visiting The University of Alabama campus, be sure to visit the Department of Journalism, housed within the College of Communication and Information Sciences. The department chair is Dr. Jennifer D. Greer and her office is in Room 490 Reese Phifer Hall.
The department and college – with eight academic, research and service units – have some of the finest facilities in the nation. They include reporting, photography, editing and online computer labs, radio and television production labs and studios, conference and seminar rooms, a research center, a broadcast production center with radio and TV operations, a large reading room with online and library research services and a large collection of newspapers, magazines and journals from throughout the world.
Classroom, office and special-use space totaling more than 100,000 square feet is available to students, faculty and staff in the department and college.
Established in 1926, the journalism department began with an emphasis it retains today: professional education for print journalism, updated to include new media applications.
Three departments and their graduate programs in the College of Communication and Information Sciences – Journalism, Advertising & Public Relations, and Telecommunication & Film -- have full accreditation of their undergraduate programs by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
Though not part of the college, the University’s award-winning student newspaper, the Crimson White, is largely staffed by students from the department and college.
