For 26 years, The University of Alabama Department of Journalism has been committed to increasing diversity in America's newsrooms.
The first Minority Journalism Workshop, as it was originally called, was held in 1984. It was conceived as a means to introduce talented high school students to the ins and outs of a career in journalism through an intensive 10-day workshop on The University of Alabama campus.
Each year, 20 to 30 high school students are selected from a competitive applicant pool to attend the workshop.
With each passing year, the diversity of cultures represented by the students attending MJW has continued to grow.
