Cultural Studies Minors
The Department of Advertising and Public Relations offers its
students opportunities to earn tailored cultural minors in African
culture
studies, Eastern culture studies, Latin culture studies,
multiculture studies, and Western culture studies.
African Culture Studies (24-26 hours with at least 6 hours above

Stillman College and the University of Alabama established a cooperative
agreement in 1969 which enables students and faculty of each institution
to use the libraries of the other and course offering exchanges
permitting students at each school to take some courses at the
other upon appropriate approval by respective officials. This program
makes possible joint faculty appointments between the two institutions.
HIS 336 African History 3 hours. A survey of the history of the
African continent from the earliest times to present. The course
will examine traditional African political cultural systems, as
well as the rise of
modern African nations in the twentieth century. Spring.
PSC 333 Contemporary Africa 3 hours. An analysis of contemporary
political developments throughout Africa with special emphasis on
West Africa. Concepts such as "dependent economies," "self-sufficiency," regional organization, and nationalism will be considered.
PSC 436 Government and Politics in African Countries 3 hours.
The study of the Constitutional developments, governmental structures
and functions, political parties and foreign policies of African
countries.
Spring.
ART 323 African, Afro-American and Caribbean Art 2 hours. A survey of
the major art styles of Africa and the African Diaspora in the US
and the West Indies. Fall
MUS 425 Afro-American 2 hours. An exploration of American music
to show the characteristics surviving from the African tradition
and the contributions of Black musicians to Western musical culture.
Fall.
ENG 337 African Oral Traditions 3 hours. An introduction to the
rich oral heritage of Africa and its influence on New World traditions.
Topics include poetry, song, myths, epic, folktales, and oral history.
A wide selection of cultures and peoples will be considered.
ENG 434 African Literature 3 hours. An introduction to the written
prose, poetry, and drama of Africa. Literature both in African languages
(in translation) and in English will be covered. Representative
works in
all genres, West, East and Southern Africa will be considered.
HAUSA
Hausa is the largest natively spoken language in sub-Sahara Africa,
being the native language of probably more than 20 million people
in northern Nigeria and contiguous areas of Niger, Moreover, it
is universally used as a lingua franca in the entire northern half
of Nigeria, throughout Niger, and even in contiguous areas of countries
neighboring these. In addition, there are sizable Hausa speaking
communities in every major city of West Africa and even beyond.
HAU 131-132 Elementary Hausa 3 hours. A two semester beginning course
in Hausa with emphasis on acquisition of conversational proficiency
and understanding of Hausa Culture. Pronunciation and grammar will
be taught indirectly through use of intensive oral drills.
HAU 231-232 Intermediate Hausa 3 hours. A continuation of emphasis
on acquisition of conversational proficiency and understanding of
Hausa Culture. Reading of selected tests to increase student's vocabulary
and
command of Hausa in everyday usage.
HAU 435 Advanced Hausa Seminar 3 hours. Advanced Hausa Seminar
is designed for undergraduate students at the senior level following
the completion of the intermediate level Hausa. The major purpose
of the
course is to provide students with practical experiences useful
in preparation for service in government or private business with
foreign connections.

In reveiwing the potential courses for this minor, we have sought to be
inclusive rather than exclusive. With that in mind, we added Russian
and former soviet areas. We have also sought not to focus strictly
on the present (as in the world business minor) but to incorporate
the past as well (for those seeking a more historical approach)
by adding Greek and Latin and related classics.
